Yours, Everlasting
A love born in wartime. A promise that lasts a lifetime
England, 1943. With the war raging and her future already decided, Betty is expected to marry well and want no more. But when her work as a WAAF nurse opens her eyes to a wider world – and she meets John, an army captain who sees her as an equal – everything changes.
Their love unfolds in letters, stolen hours, and moments of rare tenderness amid the chaos of war. Yet as loss, duty, and impossible choices threaten to tear lives apart, Betty must learn what it truly means to love – and what it costs to keep a promise.
My inspiration
Yours, Everlasting is inspired by the real-life love story of Ron and Pam, whom I met in the 1980s when I was fourteen. What began with a simple hello grew into a friendship that lasted into adulthood.
After Ron died of a heart attack in the late 1990s, I visited Pam and noticed a pile of worn envelopes containing the letters he had written to her almost daily during WW2. For the next twenty years, she lived alone, rereading his letters and longing for the day they would be reunited. Their enduring love and her profound grief left an indelible impression on me. Years later, those precious letters passed to me.
Although the story is fiction, I have woven edited excerpts from Ron’s letters throughout the book. It has been an absolute privilege to read and share his words.

"I watched the fields slip away from me on either side, and as I watched, I ran through my life, and all its youthful hopes and ambitions, and I realise that I had achieved the greatest goal any man can achieve – the perfect love of woman."
